A Paperless Contact Tracing Solution In Response To COVID-19

Challenge

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Community Living Algoma (CLA) employees were required to fill out handwritten government mandated surveys to assess COVID-19 risk on behalf of entering staff members, essential visitors, and persons supported at their many locations in Sault Ste. Marie.


For CLA employees, this was an incredibly tedious effort, and it was nearly impossible to gather analytics. Contact tracing became increasingly challenging as employees would need to sort through thousands of papers to find a person who may have been at risk. Surveys from all locations were collected daily and delivered to a central location for record keeping and auditing. Each time the survey was updated to meet the current requirements, copies would need to be printed daily for each location and maintained separately from previously completed surveys. The current process was very unreliable.


Solution

Due to CLA’s unique security requirements and need for granular data, a standard surveying application or existing solution would not be sufficient.


We created an application called CoviDefend that would allow internal access for CLA employees to fill out a digital survey based on the location and the status of the person visiting the location. The process of making changes or updates to the survey questions was simple and instant.


Power BI was used for gathering analytics, allowing mechanisms to track the number of surveys completed at each location and streamline the contact tracing process which ultimately reduces the risk of a COVID-19 outbreak.


This solution was unique because a custom implementation was required to track each available CLA location and break down corresponding information to each site.


Benefits

As a result of integrating CoviDefend, CLA employees were able to save a tremendous amount of time on the COVID-19 screening/reporting process during their shifts. The product also allowed for a shift to a paperless solution, eliminating the daily usage of paper surveys.
